Karen Kelly, MD, is an internationally recognized lung cancer
expert dedicated to providing enhanced cancer care through clinical
trials to everyone throughout the region.
Since becoming deputy director in 2006, she has built the clinical
trials infrastructure that has revitalized the clinical trials
program to better serve patients and streamline the process for
physicians.
Dr. Kelly has been at the forefront in the development of numerous
clinical trials evaluating anticancer agents, primarily for small-cell
and non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Widely published,
Dr. Kelly has authored or coauthored nearly 100 publications.
Background
A native of Derby, Kansas, Dr. Kelly received
her undergraduate degree from Emporia State University. She went on to
receive her medical degree from the University of Kansas School
of Medicine. Dr. Kelly did her fellowship in
hematology/oncology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences
Center. Dr. Kelly served 16 years at the University of
Colorado’s Health Sciences Center. Additionally,
she served as the director of the clinical lung cancer program for
the University of Colorado’s Comprehensive Cancer Center.

director position of KUCC in October 2006. She is the recipient
of the Frank B. Tyler professorship.
